The Internet Gets These Wrong All the Time
By Erin Delaney Brimhall MSN, CRNP
Let’s be honest.
The internet is a wonderful place for cat videos, vacation photos, and finding a new dinner recipe.
Medical advice? Not always.
Every day, our providers hear patients repeat skin care myths they found online, heard from a friend, or learned from social media influencers with perfect skin and questionable credentials.
So today, we’re setting the record straight.
Here are five dermatology truths that might surprise you—and could even save your skin.
#1: Skin Cancer Doesn’t Always Look Like Skin Cancer
Most people imagine skin cancer as a large, dark mole that suddenly appears.
The reality? Some skin cancers are sneaky.
We’ve diagnosed skin cancers that looked like:
- A pimple that wouldn’t go away
- A small pink bump
- A dry patch
- A scar-like area
- A sore that repeatedly heals and returns
Even more surprising, melanoma—the deadliest form of skin cancer—doesn’t always appear black or dark brown. Some melanomas have little to no pigment at all.
That’s why dermatologists recommend paying attention to anything that is new, changing, bleeding, itching, or simply doesn’t seem right.
Your skin has a way of trying to tell you something.
The key is listening.
#2: The Sun Damage You’re Seeing Today Happened Years Ago
Here’s one that catches many people off guard.
That brown spot on your cheek? Those rough patches on your scalp? Those wrinkles appearing around your eyes?
Much of that damage likely occurred years—even decades—ago. Sun damage accumulates over time.
Every beach trip. Every baseball game. Every day spent mowing the lawn. Every “I don’t need sunscreen today.”
Your skin keeps score. In fact, many patients don’t begin seeing visible signs of sun damage until their 40s, 50s, or even later.
The good news? It’s never too late to start protecting your skin.
The best sunscreen is the one you’re willing to wear every day.
#3: Accutane Isn’t the “Scary Drug” It Used to Be
Mention Accutane and you’ll often hear:
“I heard that’s dangerous,” or “Drinking wine on Accutane will make your liver explode,” or “My friend told me never to take it and go out in the sun.”
Let’s clear something up.
Modern Accutane therapy has helped millions of patients achieve life-changing improvements in severe acne.
While it does require careful monitoring and isn’t right for everyone, today’s treatment protocols are highly structured and closely supervised by dermatology providers.
What often gets overlooked is the emotional impact acne can have.
Acne isn’t simply cosmetic.
It can affect:
- Confidence
- Social interactions
- Mental health
- Career opportunities
- Quality of life
For the right patient, Accutane can be one of the most effective treatments available.
The real danger isn’t Accutane. The real danger is believing you must suffer through severe acne because of outdated internet myths.
#4: Eczema Isn’t Just “Dry Skin”
This one surprises almost everyone. Eczema is not simply dry skin.
It’s actually a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin’s protective barrier. That’s why lotion alone often isn’t enough.
Patients frequently tell us:
“I’ve tried every moisturizer in the store.”
And they’re frustrated because nothing seems to work. That’s because eczema often requires a treatment plan that addresses the underlying inflammation—not just the dryness.
Triggers can include both intrinsic and extrinsic things:
- Stress
- Allergies
- Fragrances
- Weather changes
- Certain fabrics
- Environmental irritants
If your skin is constantly itchy, inflamed, or keeping you awake at night, it may be more than dry skin.
Much more.
#5: Mohs Surgery Has One of the Highest Cure Rates in Medicine
Many patients hear the word “surgery” and immediately become nervous. We understand. But here’s something most people don’t know:
Mohs Surgery is considered the gold standard for treating many forms of skin cancer and offers cure rates of up to 99% for certain cancers when treated appropriately.
The procedure is unique because every layer of removed tissue is examined during treatment.
That means:
- Maximum cancer removal
- Maximum preservation of healthy tissue
- Immediate analysis
- Exceptional outcomes
At WellAve Dermatology, our fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons perform this highly specialized procedure to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes while preserving appearance and function.
Many patients leave saying: “That wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected.”
And that’s exactly what we like to hear.
Bonus Myth: “If It Doesn’t Hurt, It Can’t Be Serious”
This may be the biggest myth of all. Many skin cancers don’t hurt. Melanoma often doesn’t hurt. Precancerous lesions frequently don’t hurt.
In fact, some of the most concerning things dermatologists find are completely painless.
Pain is not a reliable warning sign.
Change is.
If something on your skin is changing, growing, bleeding, crusting, or simply doesn’t look right, don’t wait.
The Bottom Line
Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It deserves more attention than random internet advice.
The truth is that many serious skin conditions begin quietly and without obvious symptoms. That’s why regular skin checks matter.
At WellAve Dermatology, we’re passionate about helping patients separate fact from fiction, detect skin cancer early, manage chronic skin conditions, and keep their skin healthy for life. Because when it comes to your skin, the internet doesn’t always know best.
A board-certified dermatology provider does.
