How WellAve Dermatology and the American Cancer Society Are Making Waves in Frederick

By Allan Harrington, MD, Chief Medical Officer, WellAve Dermatology

At WellAve Dermatology, we believe great communities are built on great partnerships—and Frederick, Maryland, continues to remind us just how powerful that can be. This year, we’re thrilled to deepen our relationship with the American Cancer Society (ACS) through our involvement in Sailing Through the Winter Solstice 2025, one of Frederick’s most joyful and impactful traditions.

When our team chose to sponsor the vibrant “Thom’s Magical Reef” float, it wasn’t just about creating a beautiful display (though we do love the sparkle!). It was about supporting an organization that delivers life-changing resources to local families facing cancer—and celebrating the spirit of a community we are so proud to serve.

Why This Partnership Matters to WellAve

Since opening our doors in Frederick in 2021, WellAve Dermatology has grown from a small team with a big vision to a leading provider of patient-centered dermatologic care in Frederick County and beyond. With expanded medical providers and even a dedicated skin cancer surgery team, we’ve worked hard to make expert dermatology accessible, compassionate, and convenient for every patient who entrusts us with their care.

As a Mohs surgeon with more than three decades of experience, I’ve seen firsthand the difference early detection and expert treatment can make in someone’s life. That’s why our mission goes far beyond clearing rashes or smoothing wrinkles—we are here to deliver life- saving diagnostics, treat skin cancer with precision, and ensure patients feel supported at every step.

Partnering with the American Cancer Society is a natural extension of that commitment.

Supporting Frederick Families—Together

The funds raised through Sailing Through the Winter Solstice directly support ACS programs that make a genuine impact here in our region, including:

Road to Recovery – Providing free rides for patients traveling to and from treatment.
Hope Lodge – Offering free lodging for patients who must travel for cancer care.
RELAY FOR LIFE of Frederick County – Celebrating 30 years of funding research, prevention programs, and 24/7 patient support.

Every dollar donated to the Magical Reef helps ACS continue this remarkable work—and we are honored to stand beside them as a committed community partner.

Celebrating an Event That Celebrates Frederick

If you’ve never walked along Carroll Creek on a crisp winter evening, you’re missing something truly magical. Sailing Through the Winter Solstice brings Frederick alive with glowing, whimsical, volunteer-built boats that light up the entire season.

The event isn’t just beautiful—it’s meaningful. Last year it raised more than $100,000 for local nonprofits, a testament to the generosity that defines the Frederick community. This winter, we hope you’ll stop by, enjoy the lights, and join us in supporting the cause by donating to the Magical Reef float.

We’re Here for the Community—All Year Long

At WellAve, our role in Frederick runs deeper than offering convenient appointments or advanced medical care. We’re here as neighbors, advocates, and partners in health. Our commitment extends beyond our offices and into the communities we serve—because every family deserves accessible, compassionate, patient-first dermatology.

We’re proud of this partnership with the American Cancer Society, and even more proud of the Frederick-area patients, families, and volunteers who inspire us every day.
