Is That Summer Rash Really Just Sweat?

5 Things You Should Know About Tinea Before It Spreads

It’s hot. It’s humid. You’re sweating more than usual. Then one day you notice a red, itchy patch on your skin that just won’t go away.

Sound familiar?

Every summer, our providers at WellAve Dermatology see a significant increase in patients with tinea, one of the most common fungal skin infections. The good news? It’s incredibly treatable. The not-so-good news? Many people mistake it for eczema, dry skin, or an allergic reaction and end up making it worse.

Let’s clear up a few myths.

1. Tinea Has Nothing to Do With Worms

Let’s get this out of the way first.

Despite the nickname “ringworm,” there is absolutely no worm involved.

Tinea is caused by a fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments. During Maryland summers, that’s practically an open invitation.

Depending on where it appears, tinea may have different names:

  • Ringworm (Tinea corporis) – Body
  • Athlete’s Foot (Tinea pedis) – Feet
  • Jock Itch (Tinea cruris) – Groin
  • Scalp Ringworm (Tinea capitis) – Scalp

Different names. Same fungus.

2. Heat and Humidity Are Fuel for Tinea

If you’ve been spending time:

  • At the pool
  • On the beach
  • At the gym
  • Playing sports
  • Working outside
  • Sweating in the summer heat

…you’re at greater risk.

Fungi love moisture. Damp clothing, sweaty shoes, and staying in a wet bathing suit too long create the perfect environment for these infections to grow.

That’s one reason we see so many more cases during the summer months.

3. It Doesn’t Always Look Like You Think

Many people expect ringworm to look like a perfect red circle.

Sometimes it does.

But other times, it simply appears as:

  • An itchy rash
  • Dry or flaky skin
  • A scaly patch
  • Redness that slowly gets larger
  • Cracked skin between the toes
  • A rash in skin folds that just won’t heal

Because it can look like eczema or psoriasis, many people buy an over-the-counter steroid cream.

Unfortunately…

4. The Wrong Cream Can Actually Make It Worse

This is one of the biggest mistakes we see.

Steroid creams may temporarily reduce redness or itching, making the rash appear better for a few days.

But if it’s actually tinea, the fungus continues to grow underneath the surface.

The result?

The infection often spreads, becomes harder to recognize, and may require stronger treatment later.

That’s why getting the right diagnosis is so important.

5. Tinea Is Treatable—But Don’t Wait Too Long

The good news is that most cases respond very well to treatment.

Depending on where the infection is located and how severe it is, treatment may include:

  • Prescription-strength antifungal creams
  • Oral antifungal medications
  • Personalized skin care recommendations to help prevent it from returning

The earlier treatment begins, the sooner you’ll usually feel better—and the less likely you are to spread it to family members or other parts of your body.

How Can You Help Prevent Tinea?

Fortunately, a few simple habits can make a big difference:

  • Keep your skin as dry as possible.
  • Change out of sweaty clothing after exercising.
  • Wear sandals in locker rooms and public showers.
  • Change your socks daily (or more often if your feet sweat).
  • Don’t sit around in a wet bathing suit.
  • Avoid sharing towels, hats, shoes, or athletic equipment.

These small steps can greatly reduce your chances of developing a fungal infection.

When Should You See a Dermatology Provider?

If you have a rash that:

  • Isn’t improving after a week or two
  • Continues to spread
  • Is becoming painful
  • Keeps coming back
  • Involves your scalp, nails, or face
  • Or you’re simply not sure what it is…

…it’s time to let a dermatology provider take a look.

The truth is, not every rash is fungal, and not every fungal infection looks the same.

At WellAve Dermatology, we diagnose skin conditions every day. Sometimes it’s tinea. Sometimes it’s eczema. Sometimes it’s psoriasis—or something entirely different. That’s why having an experienced dermatology provider evaluate your skin can save you time, frustration, and unnecessary treatments.

Don’t Let a Small Rash Become a Bigger Problem

Summer should be about making memories—not scratching an itchy rash that keeps getting worse.

If something doesn’t look right, trust your instincts.

The sooner you know what you’re dealing with, the sooner you can get back to enjoying your summer.

At WellAve Dermatology, we offer convenient appointments across Maryland, including same-day appointments at many of our locations. Whether it’s tinea or another skin condition, our experienced providers are here to help you get answers—and relief.
