At WellAve Dermatology, we are proud to spotlight Melanoma Awareness Month this May — a time to raise awareness about one of the most serious, yet preventable, forms of skin cancer. We’re especially excited to share insights from one of our top providers, Danielle Costabile, MPAS, PA-C, who has been serving the Easton, Maryland community with unmatched care and expertise for several years.
Melanoma arises from melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in our skin, and often appears as a new or changing mole. It can be aggressive, but early detection and prevention make a world of difference. That’s why Danielle encourages everyone to know the ABCDEs of Melanoma:
– **A**symmetry
– **B**order irregularity
– **C**olor variation
– **D**iameter larger than a pencil eraser
– **E**volution or change over time

Daily sun protection is key. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapply often, and don’t forget areas like your ears, scalp, and neck. Protective clothing and smart sun habits go a long way.
Let’s make Melanoma Awareness Month a time of education and action. Schedule your annual skin check, talk to loved ones about the signs, and take charge of your skin health. Early detection saves lives.
