Melanoma Awareness Month: This Is Your Moment to Act

May is Melanoma Awareness Month—and if there’s one message I want every patient, family member, and community to hear, it’s this:

Melanoma does not wait. And neither should you.

At WellAve Dermatology, we see firsthand how powerful early detection can be—and how dangerous delays can be. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, but when caught early, it is highly treatable. When ignored, it can become life-threatening.

That’s the reality. And that’s why this month matters.

What Is Melanoma—and Why Should You Care?

Melanoma begins in the melanocytes—the cells that give your skin its color. But unlike other skin cancers, melanoma has the ability to spread quickly to other parts of the body.

Here’s what makes it especially dangerous:

  • It can develop from an existing mole—or appear as a brand new spot
  • It doesn’t always look “obvious”
  • It can grow and spread faster than people expect

Bottom line: You cannot afford to guess.

The Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

We teach our patients to follow the ABCDE rule when evaluating moles or spots:

A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
B – Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges
C – Color: Multiple colors or uneven tone
D – Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (but can be smaller)
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, or color

But here’s the truth:

If something looks or feels “off”—that alone is enough reason to get it checked.

Who Is at Risk? (Hint: It’s Not Just “Sun Lovers”)

There’s a dangerous misconception that melanoma only affects people who spend excessive time in the sun.

That’s not true.

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Have fair skin or a history of sunburns
  • Use tanning beds (even occasionally)
  • Have a family history of skin cancer
  • Have many moles or atypical moles
  • Spend time outdoors—even casually—without protection

And yes, melanoma can occur in people of all skin tones.

Prevention Is Powerful—But Action Is Everything

We strongly encourage:

  • Daily sunscreen use (SPF 30+)—yes, even on cloudy days
  • Protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
  • Avoiding peak UV hours when possible
  • Regular self-skin checks

But let me be clear:

Prevention helps—but detection saves lives.

Why a Skin Check Could Save Your Life

One of the most common things we hear from patients diagnosed with melanoma is:

“I almost didn’t come in.”

That hesitation can be the difference between a simple in-office procedure and a much more serious diagnosis.

At WellAve Dermatology, we’ve built our practice around access and urgency:

  • Same-day and expedited appointments
  • 7 locations across Maryland
  • Fellowship-trained providers, including Mohs surgeons
  • A patient-first approach focused on outcomes—not volume

You should not have to wait weeks—or months—for answers.

This Is Your Defense

Melanoma doesn’t care how busy you are.
It doesn’t wait for a convenient time.
And it doesn’t give second chances easily.

But you do have control over one thing:

Taking action.

If you have a spot that concerns you—or if it’s simply been too long since your last skin check—schedule an appointment.

Not next month.
Not later this summer.

Now.

Because when it comes to melanoma:

Early detection isn’t just important—it can save your life.
