Expert Tips for Healthier, Happier Skin

Healthy Skin Starts With the Right Cleanser

Walk down any skincare aisle and you’ll see dozens—if not hundreds—of facial cleansers promising clearer, brighter, smoother skin. With so many choices, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The truth is not every cleanser works for every skin type. In fact, using the wrong cleanser can sometimes worsen dryness, irritation, or acne

At WellAve Dermatology, we often remind patients that great skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. It starts with choosing the right cleanser and using it correctly.

In this guide, Molly Warnock, PA-C, MMS, DMSc, one of WellAve’s experienced dermatology providers, shares practical advice on how to select the best facial cleanser for your skin.

Why Your Facial Cleanser Matters

Your cleanser does far more than remove dirt from your skin.

A well-formulated cleanser helps remove:

• Excess oil
• Sweat
• Environmental pollutants
• Makeup and sunscreen
• Bacteria that contribute to acne

However, overly harsh cleansers can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to:

• Dryness
• Irritation
• Redness
• Increased oil production

💬 Provider Insight

“The goal of cleansing isn’t to make your skin feel tight or squeaky clean. Healthy skin should feel refreshed, balanced, and comfortable after washing.”
— Molly Warnock, PA-C

Step One: Know Your Skin Type

The most important factor when choosing a facial cleanser is your skin type.

Different skin types require different formulations.

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

Patients with oily or acne-prone skin often benefit from cleansers that help control oil and unclog pores.

Look for ingredients like:

• Salicylic acid – helps clear clogged pores
• Benzoyl peroxide – reduces acne-causing bacteria
• Gel or foaming cleansers – remove excess oil

These ingredients help reduce breakouts while keeping pores clear.

Dry or Sensitive Skin

If your skin feels tight, flaky, or easily irritated, gentle hydrating cleansers are best.

Look for:

• Cream or lotion-based cleansers
• Fragrance-free formulas
• Ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid

These ingredients help protect the skin barrier while cleansing the skin effectively.

Combination Skin

Many patients have combination skin, meaning some areas are oily (usually the T-zone) while others are dry.

balanced, gentle cleanser that removes oil without stripping moisture is usually the best option.

A Common Skincare Mistake: Pore-Clogging Moisturizers

Another issue Molly frequently sees in clinic involves comedogenic moisturizers.

comedogenic moisturizer contains ingredients that can clog pores, which may lead to:

• Blackheads
• Whiteheads
• Breakouts

These moisturizers are often thick, oil-heavy formulas. While they may benefit very dry skin, they are generally not recommended for acne-prone or oily skin types.

If you struggle with breakouts, look for products labeled:

✔ Non-comedogenic

These products hydrate the skin without clogging pores.

Technique Matters Too

Even the best cleanser won’t be effective if it isn’t used properly.

Molly’s Simple Cleansing Routine

1️⃣ Use lukewarm water (hot water can irritate skin).
2️⃣ Apply a dime-sized amount of cleanser.
3️⃣ Gently massage into the skin for 20–30 seconds.
4️⃣ Rinse thoroughly.
5️⃣ Pat dry with a clean towel.
6️⃣ Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen during the day.

Most dermatology providers recommend cleansing twice per day — morning and evening.

Over-washing can actually irritate the skin and worsen breakouts.

Dermatologist-Recommended Cleansers

Because the skincare marketplace is so crowded, many patients ask us where to begin.

At WellAve Dermatology, we curate a selection of dermatologist-recommended skincare products that we frequently suggest to our patients.

These products are selected for their:

• Skin-safe ingredients
• Proven effectiveness
• Compatibility with dermatologic treatments

When to See a Dermatology Professional

If you are experiencing:

• Persistent acne
• Redness or irritation
• Dry or flaky skin
• Breakouts that don’t improve with over-the-counter products

It may be time to see a dermatology provider.

Sometimes a small change in skincare products or routine can make a significant difference in your skin health.

Healthy Skin Starts With the Basics

Choosing the right facial cleanser is one of the simplest and most important steps you can take for healthier skin.

💬 From Molly

“You don’t need a complicated routine. The right cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen can go a long way toward keeping your skin healthy.”
