Sometimes Your Skin Is Trying to Tell You Something Important.
Our skin changes throughout our lives. Freckles appear, new moles develop, age spots become more noticeable, and bumps seem to come out of nowhere. Most of these changes are completely harmless.
But every now and then, your skin sends a signal that shouldn’t be ignored.
One of the most common things we hear from patients is, “I noticed it months ago, but I didn’t think it was anything.”
Fortunately, many skin conditions—including skin cancer—can be treated very successfully when caught early.
Here are five skin changes that deserve a closer look from a dermatologist.
1. A Mole That Is Changing
You’ve probably heard that you should watch your moles, but what exactly does that mean?
Pay attention if a mole:
- Gets larger
- Changes color
- Develops uneven borders
- Becomes raised
- Starts itching
- Bleeds
- Looks noticeably different from your other moles
Dermatologists often refer to this as the ABCDE Rule:
A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
B – Border: The edges are irregular, jagged, or poorly defined.
C – Color: Multiple shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue are present.
D – Diameter: Larger than about 6 millimeters (roughly the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can be smaller.
E – Evolving: The mole changes in size, shape, color, or symptoms over time.
Not every changing mole is melanoma—but every changing mole deserves attention.
2. A Sore That Won’t Heal
Did you nick yourself shaving months ago?
Is there a spot that keeps scabbing over, only to reopen again?
A sore that refuses to heal can sometimes be an early sign of skin cancer, particularly basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.
If a spot has remained open, crusted, or repeatedly bleeds for several weeks, don’t continue waiting for it to disappear on its own.
Have it evaluated.
3. A New Growth That Keeps Getting Bigger
Many harmless skin growths appear as we age.
However, if you notice a bump that continues to grow, changes in appearance, or develops rapidly over weeks or months, it’s worth having checked.
Skin cancers don’t always look like dark moles.
Sometimes they appear as:
- Pink bumps
- Pearly growths
- Rough, scaly patches
- Wart-like lesions
- Thickened areas of skin
The only reliable way to know what you’re dealing with is through a professional skin examination.
4. A Spot That Bleeds Easily
Have you noticed a spot that bleeds when you wash your face?
Or one that starts bleeding after only minimal contact?
Healthy skin shouldn’t bleed without a reason.
While there are many non-cancerous causes, recurrent bleeding can also be associated with certain types of skin cancer.
If the same area continues to bleed or crust repeatedly, it’s time to schedule an appointment.
5. A Rash That Simply Won’t Go Away
Most rashes improve with time or over-the-counter treatments.
But if you’ve had a rash that lingers for weeks, keeps coming back, or seems to be spreading, it’s worth seeing a dermatologist.
Persistent rashes may be caused by:
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Allergic reactions
- Fungal infections
- Autoimmune conditions
- Skin cancers that mimic common rashes
The sooner an accurate diagnosis is made, the sooner appropriate treatment can begin.
Don’t Try to Diagnose Yourself
The internet can be a helpful resource, but no online search can replace the experience of a trained dermatologist.
Every day we meet patients who assumed a suspicious spot was “just getting older,” “a bug bite,” or “nothing to worry about.” Sometimes they’re right—but sometimes they’re not.
The good news is that when skin cancer is detected early, treatment is often simpler, less invasive, and highly successful.
The Bottom Line
Most skin changes aren’t emergencies.
But they shouldn’t be ignored either.
If you notice:
✔ A changing mole
✔ A sore that won’t heal
✔ A new growth that’s getting larger
✔ A spot that bleeds repeatedly
✔ A rash that simply won’t go away
…it’s time to let a dermatologist take a look.
